Operation Math proves a real success with kids

There is no shortage of math apps targeted towards kids, but few are both educational and engaging. Operation Math ($1.99) is fairly simple in design but combines learning math skills with a James-Bond like spy theme to teach childre addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Once you open the app, you can choose your player, skill areas and mission. You take on the role of Agent Prime who sets out to even the score with Dr. Odd who is up to his old tricks.

I tested out the app with my nine year old son and some students in the school, and they all appear to enjoy it. I think that the key to the apps' success is having to solve a series of math problems in a limited period of time in order to unlock the door and make it to the next level. As the clock counts down, the heart starts pumping.
