Skype for iPad: Here, gone and here again

Skype seems to have a hard time deciding on when to release the iPad app. Several weeks ago, a promotional video was leaked onto YouTube, only to be taken down shortly after. The same happened yesterday with the release of their long awaited iPad app.

The app was released to the App Store for a few hours and then removed with the argument that it was released prematurely. It appears that the app is now back  again and available for download. You may want to download it quickly in the event that the company decides to take it down again.

I downloaded the free app today and tested it out. It is fairly simple in design with the most noticeable difference being that contacts are displayed as thumbnail images. It works over both wifi and 3G and the call quality is quite good. I had been using Facetime to make video calls over the summer which also worked quite well. Facetime, however, currently works only over a wifi network and is limited to calls with other iOS users. Skype allows you to make free video calls to other Skype users as well as cheap calls to landlines.
